Cranberry extract standardized for proanthocyanidins (PACs) is commonly used as a natural approach to help prevent and manage urinary tract infections (UTIs). Cranberry PACs and other cranberry constituents act against a variety of bacteria by reducing adhesion, biofilm formation, and co-aggregation — mechanisms relevant to urinary tract pathogens and certain gut microbes. Chronic intestinal inflammation, as seen in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), is influenced by genetic, lifestyle, and dietary factors and is associated with increased colon cancer risk.
Diets rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds such as polyphenols and dietary fiber can support gut health and may help lower colon cancer risk. Using a DSS-AOM (dextran sodium sulfate–azoxymethane) mouse model of colitis-associated colon tumorigenesis, previous studies demonstrated a significant reduction in colon tumors and tissue inflammation in mice treated with whole cranberry proanthocyanidins or cranberry fractions enriched in either polyphenolic or non-polyphenolic components.
Multiple cranberry constituents — including flavonoids, proanthocyanidins, and triterpenoids — have also been reported to inhibit cancer cell growth and proliferation, trigger apoptosis, induce cell cycle arrest, and modulate related signaling pathways in tumor cells.
