WHAT IS BETA 1,3/1,6-GLUCAN?

A glucan is a carbohydrate polymer composed solely of glucose units. These glucose units can be linked together through alpha- or beta-type bonds; the orientation of the bond defines the class of glucan. The numbers indicate the positions on the glucose rings where one unit connects to the next.

Beta-1,3/1,6-glucans occur naturally in the cell walls of yeast such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. In this structure, glucose residues form a main chain linked by beta-1,3 bonds, while additional glucose units are attached as side branches via beta-1,6 linkages.

BETA 1,3/1,6-GLUCAN BENEFITS

Beta glucans and heart health

  • The heart-protective reputation of oat-rich diets is partly due to the soluble fiber beta-1,3/1,6-glucan found in oats, which contributes to cardiovascular benefits.

Support in cancer management

  • Because cancer causes many deaths worldwide, researchers have long sought agents that may help in treatment. Studies from institutions such as the Biotechnology Research Center at Teikyo University have shown that lentinan — a beta-1,3 glucan from shiitake mushrooms — can inhibit tumor growth and development. Lentinan is thought to reduce tumor activity and may alleviate some side effects associated with cancer therapies.

Helping the body fight infections

  • Beyond cancer support, research indicates beta-1,3/1,6-glucans can enhance the body’s defenses against certain antibiotic-resistant bacteria and respiratory viruses. For example, investigators at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston observed improved outcomes in mice infected with pathogenic bacteria when treated with these compounds.
