WHAT IS ANNONA SQUAMOSA SEED EXTRACT?

Annona squamosa seed extract (custard apple) is derived from seeds that are frequently discarded as waste. In a mouse model, the seed extract was evaluated for its potential to help control hyperthyroidism.

The study measured key thyroid-related endpoints including serum thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) levels, hepatic glucose-6-phosphatase (G-6-Pase) activity, and 5'-mono-deiodinase (5'DI) activity. To assess possible liver toxicity, hepatic antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), together with lipid peroxidation (LPO), were also examined.

ANNONA SQUAMOSA SEED EXTRACT BENEFITS

  1. Rich in antioxidants
Annona squamosa seed extract contains antioxidant compounds that help neutralize free radicals. Reducing oxidative stress can lower the risk of chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and certain cancers.

  2. May support mood
Cherimoya is a notable source of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine); one cup (160 g) of the fruit supplies about 24% of the Reference Daily Intake, a nutrient important for neurotransmitter synthesis and mood regulation.

  3. May support eye health
Leaf extracts of Annona squamosa are a source of the carotenoid lutein, which accumulates in the eye and helps protect vision by combating oxidative damage.

  4. May help manage blood pressure
The plant is rich in minerals like potassium and magnesium, which contribute to healthy blood pressure regulation.

  5. May aid digestion
One cup (160 g) of cherimoya provides nearly 5 g of dietary fiber, meeting over 17% of the recommended daily value and supporting regular digestion.

  6. Potential anti-cancer activity
Certain flavonoids present in cherimoya—such as catechin, epicatechin, and epigallocatechin—have shown inhibitory effects on cancer cell growth in in vitro studies.

  7. May reduce chronic inflammation
Compounds in the plant may help modulate inflammatory responses, which are linked to a range of chronic diseases.

  8. May support immune function
Like many tropical fruits, cherimoya is a good source of vitamin C, which plays a key role in maintaining immune defenses.
