WHAT IS SOURSOP EXTRACT?

Soursop extract is derived from Annona muricata, a species in the Annonaceae family (commonly called the custard apple family). The tree produces large, oval fruits with a green, spiny rind and soft white, fibrous flesh. Fruits can reach up to about 8 inches in length and weigh as much as 10 pounds.

The taste of soursop (also called graviola) is often compared to a blend of mango and pineapple. Traditionally used in folk medicine for a variety of ailments, soursop is valued as a dietary supplement for its broad nutrient and phytochemical profile and associated health effects.

SOURSOP EXTRACT BENEFITS:

Supports digestion
One whole soursop fruit provides roughly 83% of the recommended daily intake of dietary fiber, an essential nutrient for gastrointestinal health. Adequate fiber supports regular bowel movements and helps prevent constipation.

Potential anti-cancer activity
Although most studies to date are in vitro, soursop extracts have shown activity against certain cancer cells. Laboratory research has indicated that graviola extracts can induce cell death in some cancer cell lines and inhibit tumor growth in preclinical models, including effects observed against breast cancer and leukemia cells. More clinical research is needed to confirm these effects in humans.

Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects
Soursop contains compounds that can neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, a contributor to inflammation. By limiting oxidative damage, soursop may help moderate inflammatory responses in the body.

Helps support healthy blood pressure
Potassium in soursop aids sodium excretion and helps relax blood vessel walls—both actions that can contribute to lowering blood pressure. A single whole soursop fruit can supply roughly one-third to one-half of the recommended daily potassium intake.

Antibacterial properties
In vitro studies suggest soursop extracts have antibacterial activity against a range of organisms, including bacteria implicated in dental decay and gum disease. Other laboratory research has reported effects against pathogens such as Vibrio cholerae and Staphylococcus species. While promising, these findings require further validation in clinical studies.
