WHAT ARE BILBERRY ANTHOCYANINS?
Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) is among the richest natural sources of anthocyanins. The key bioactive compounds thought to account for bilberry’s many health-promoting effects are the polyphenols that give the fruit its deep blue-black color and high anthocyanin concentration. In addition to its traditional reputation for supporting vision, bilberry has been reported to help lower blood glucose, reduce lipid levels, support immune defenses, and decrease oxidative stress.
Because of these activities, bilberry may be useful in managing or helping to prevent conditions linked to inflammation, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, dementia and other age-associated disorders. Additional studies have noted other beneficial biological effects of bilberry as well.

BILBERRY ANTHOCYANINS BENEFITS:
Cancer prevention
The compounds in bilberry are potent antioxidants that help protect cells from damage. Eating antioxidant-rich foods is important because typical Western diets often lack them, contributing to chronic disease risk. Excess anthocyanins not used by the body are excreted, so including bilberries in the diet is a safe way to support overall health.
Anti-inflammatory support
Acute inflammation is part of normal healing, but chronic inflammation is harmful and linked to many diseases. Sedentary lifestyles and energy-dense, processed diets are common drivers of prolonged inflammation, which can worsen conditions such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Regular physical activity combined with a diet rich in whole grains, unsaturated fats, oily fish, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits—especially anthocyanin-rich bilberry—can help regulate inflammation and lower the risk of these illnesses.
Vision
Bilberry may help maintain visual clarity, particularly in low-light conditions. Extracts standardized for anthocyanins (for example, bilberry extract 25% anthocyanins) have long been associated with eye health, especially night vision—an association popularized by anecdotes from World War II pilots who credited bilberry with improved visual performance.
Cardiovascular health
Bilberry extract is also used to support cardiovascular and vascular health. Anthocyanins are believed to strengthen blood vessel linings, which can help reduce blood pressure, arterial stiffness and platelet aggregation. They may also play a role in improving cholesterol profiles.
Metabolic health
Fruits high in polyphenols and anthocyanins can contribute to reductions in blood pressure, arterial stiffness and elevated cholesterol—common metabolic disturbances in Western populations—thereby supporting overall metabolic health.
